Flooding

1/24/2020 (Permalink)

Storms and heavy rains can cause heavy flooding in such a short period of time. A perfect example of this is in Lousiana currently. They had 2 feet of rain that fell consistently for 3 days, and within a 72-hour time span the streets were flooded. The National Weather Service is warning that rivers will stay in flood stage for days

Flooding means that not only will a homeowner have to think about the current situation of being displaced from their home and losing some of their personal belongings, but the results after the water is gone. Standing water is a breeding ground for bacteria.

Once the water has subsisded the presence of dirt, grime, bacteria and mold will be present. The level of these things depends on how long the standing water is left unattended. In a case like Louisiana there is no telling when the water can be extracted from the towns let alone peoples houses.

After the waters have subsided and before you immediately enter your home refer to this checklist.

1. Watch out for wild animals, poisonous snakes that may have entered the home, check thru the debris.

2. Watch out for plaster, loose ceiling structures and document everything for yourself and for insurance purposes.

3. Throw away any food, anything that may have come in contact with the flood waters, anything in the fridge.

4. Check electrical systems, gas leaks, sewage and water lines all for damage.

Winter Water Damage

1/21/2020 (Permalink)

In the wintertime, we tend to forget about mold becoming an issue in the home. For the most part, we associate mold with humid summer days creating the perfect environment for mold growth in dark, damp spaces… but this is not always the case. For example, mold growth can strike quickly after a flood or fire even in the winter. We recently encountered a home in which the pipes had burst on the third floor of the dwelling. With no one home, the water soaked the home for 2 days before the leak was discovered. Our crew began working in the home within 72 hours of the disaster and within that time mold growth could be seen on wet surfaces throughout the house. If not properly treated mold can quickly make its way into difficult to find places like vents and ducts where it may cause health issues to those in the home if not removed.

Potential Storm Damage and Water Damage

7/17/2019 (Permalink)

With colder temperatures, hailstorms may be prevalent.  Ranging from pellet-size to softball size, hail can do expensive to correct damage.  For instance, dents and dings on cars, roofing/ shingles and other parts of the home and property.

Often, wind storms can create more damage.  The fall is usually our windiest time of year when the Santa Ana winds can blow at more than 80 mph, damaging roofs, trees, and more.  If undetected, roofs that are damaged in the fall, can be leak problems when the rains hit and rain creates interior water damage.  Following the heavy winds property owners should check for:

  • Missing shingles, shutters or pieces of siding
  • Blown out windows
  • Cracks, chipping and splitting in siding, stucco, paint or wood
  • Dings and dents on roofing, siding, door frames and windowsills/windowpanes

Water Damage

Water damage might be harder to identify because it doesn’t always show up like we think it could.  Look for visible signs such as

  • Water spots or discoloration on ceilings
  • Walls or surfaces
  • Soggy and/or expanding wood
  • Leaks in the ceiling or roof
  • Damp, musty odor (indication of mold growth)

What to Do Next

If you suspect you’ve got storm-related damage, the best thing to do is call SERVPRO.  We’ll come with a sense of urgency and provide you a complete consult and estimate for the restoration services.  In many cases, we’ll help you contact  your insurance provider, if you haven’t already called them.  Most of our work comes from provider references, we work with all the major carriers.

As soon as we’re given the green light, we’ll start the drying out process.  Because mold thrives in wet or moist conditions, it’s important to act immediately.  Also, in many cases, we can avoid things like wood paneling and flooring from warping.  Water extractors are used to completely drain any standing water.  Air movers are used to thoroughly dry carpeting, walls, ceilings etc.  If the interior of your walls has become wet, we provide demo services to expose the studs and hasten the drying out time.    If mold growth has already started, we will build air-tight containments around any spaces where it exists to prevent spores from being disturbed and moving to other locations of the house through your structure’s airways.  These  containments are part of larger engineering controls which also include special HEPA filters that clean the air to EPA standards.

SERVPRO We’ve achieved this by being committed to important company values.  We treat every customer’s disaster with urgency.  Our technicians are certified; you’ll be serviced by highly experienced and knowledgeable experts in restoration services.  We are consistent in the quality of our work because we know our reputation depends on it.  Our integrity is our most valuable asset.  We don’t over-promise or under-deliver.  When we make you a promise, you can count on it.

Mold Remediation

7/17/2019 (Permalink)

This ceiling mold was the tip of the iceberg.

A few weeks ago, we had an opportunity to serve a young couple in Anaheim Hills whose home had been affected by a long term bathroom shower leak where seals had given way.  The leak had led to substantial sub-floor water retention.  Because of the long period of time that things had stayed moist, there was extensive mold growth.

During our initial inspection, we’d identified mold growth in the ceiling, and sub-floor which affected the upstairs bathroom and a downstairs bedroom and extensive work was needed to complete this project.  During the project, we had to demolish all the drywall in the bathroom and bedroom to complete our mold remediation.

Exposure to mold can be a potential health hazard.  Because of this risk, we encourage our customers not to attempt remediation on their own.  In fact, it’s the health risk involved in mold remediation that requires our trained technicians to wear full  HAZMAT suits, complete with air cannisters to aid their breathing.

The SERVPRO technicians at SERVPRO are all certified experts in mold remediation.  When we perform our services, we will protect your home by using techniques such as erecting negative air-flow containments around the work areas.  These containments prevent the migration of mold spores to other un-contaminated areas of your home.  Industrial HEPA filters filter the air in your home, removing all airborne contaminants (we’re mostly concerned about mold spores in mold remediation cases), to bring the air quality in your home to EPA health standards.

We use special anti-microbial sprays and wire brushes to scrub all surfaces where mold has grown.  We safely bag all dirt and debris from the remediation in special plastic bags and take the trash with us when we leave the work site.  While we’re on the job, we are very careful to place floor runners over any surfaces where we’ll be working and we cover your furniture and other household items with plastic sheeting to protect it while the job is in progress.

One of our recent customers shared this testimonial about our mold remediation work at their home:

SERVPRO Handles the Remediation Process From Inspecting the Damage to Paint and Flooring

We all make mistakes at one point or another, and sometimes accidents happen, even at home. If you've had the excitement of a small fire in your home recently, you'll most likely have been surprised at the amount of damage a small fire can cause. While you may have already cleaned up part of the damage, especially your personal belongings, damage to trim, carpeting, walls, floors, or anything else that is a part of your home's structure should be repaired and restored by professionals.

If you live in a rented home and have had fire damage, having professional restoration work done by those skilled in recreating your home's damaged interior is the best way to make sure you'll receive your deposit back when you move out. If you have insurance, either homeowner's, in the case of your own home, or renter's insurance, we can provide you with an inventory list that details which items are beyond repair or restoration.

As we conduct our inspection, we may find that internal beams have also been charred by the flames' heat. These should be replaced with new lumber prior to repairing any walls. Then we can continue the work with either paint or wallpaper, as well as moldings and rails. We can also repair any damaged carpets and area rugs, as well as hard floors. Wood, tile and other hard surfaces that cover your floor can be cleaned and refinished so that the fire Damage is minimized to a great extent, and many times, be completely removed. It's always possible that fire damage may be so severe that it requires partial replacement of flooring, though, just as other interior structures can at times. We can handle any problems involving your floor, and we will always restore as much as we can before replacing the remainder.

Fire damage includes smoke and soot, and this can affect soft furnishings in your home. Drapes and curtains, as well as your upholstered furniture and heavier winter blankets, should all be cleaned by experts in the field. Don't throw these items away, as we are very adept at saving these kinds of items for many of our clients. We know how to dry them all the way through, so they won't rot or become a haven for mold in the future.

Heavy Rainfall And Flood Damage

9/5/2018 (Permalink)

Just minutes after heavy rainfall, flash floods can come rushing through where you live. These kinds of floods are very dangerous, not just because of the volume and speed of the water, but due to the fact that the water contains rocks and other debris. These floods are fast rising and can invade your home just as quickly.flood damage in your home is overwhelming and can be quite devastating. When floodwaters have invaded your home, you need professional help to get your home clean and dry again. SERVPRO is standing by to help you with the professional training and equipment that is needed to do the job right.

In a flood situation, we are not finished once the water is out and your home is dry again. We must also clean your structure. Things like the subflooring and walls could need cleaning. We clean any materials which are restorable with the appropriate method.

For carpeting, SERVPRO staff clean and deodorize these areas. We choose a cleaning method that is right for the level of soiling. Six different carpet cleaning methods are utilized depending on the condition of the carpet.

Most of the time, we have a list of items which need to be cleaned. All contents exposed to water or high humidity have to be evaluated for cleaning needs. Some wood furniture might need cleaning and polishing from exposure to high humidity. We check all clothing, closets, and storage areas for contents needing cleaning and deodorizing. We also look for damage from high humidity and condensation on photographs and wall hangings. Your electronics may need special drying and cleaning services to restore them. Pool tables, pianos, clocks, and other items which are sensitive could also require specialized attention.

After restoration is complete, we finalize the job by ensuring you are satisfied. We check moisture levels one last time to ensure everything is dry and complete a walk-through with you. If there are any problems, we fix them and then remove all our equipment and supplies. Maintain relationships and communicating throughout the entire process is a huge factor in how smoothly the job is completed and how happy you are.
